As we enter into a new year and new decade, there is renewed passion and energy for accomplishment. Coming out of a decade that was filled with economic upheaval and consumer uncertainty, many corporations are making broad changes to compete in the new market. In our results oriented culture, the emphasis is often on action. This is most evident for managers and leaders whose personal and professional success is measured by results. Yet, the key to long term organizational and leadership success lies not in what you do but in how successful you are in moving your team to action.

Communication is the key to leading your teams to action that produces results. You must be able to do more than articulate the company vision and goals. Managers and leaders must be able to have conversations that build trust and produce results. Effective leaders should master having three distinct types of conversations with their teams:

Management conversations. These coaching conversations change performance and are essential to effective management. Management conversations focus on performance and feedback. You must be able to  articulate what success will look like and provide measurable objectives that you and the team member will follow up on.

Motivation conversations. Managers must be comfortable having conversations that keep people interested in and satisfied with their work. A number of studies over the years demonstrate that employees who feel connected to their work perform at higher levels. Great leaders keep team members involved and interested. Motivation moves people to action.

Mentoring Conversations. A key part of managing is being willing to mentor and to be mentored. Conversations that keep people learning and ready for the future moves people to action by focusing on support and professional development.

Managers and leaders that master Management, Motivation and Mentoring will dramatically improve the morale and performance of their teams that will drive the actions that lead to results.
